I can start my dad's car without the key. It needs to be running previously with it in though.
Don't worry about the rough idle, an O2 sensor is flatlined.

I drove a 2010 328xi 'vert for a few weeks and was messing around with it when I realized that, not only could I turn the car on without the key in it no matter what, but if the car was running and I took the key out, the car didn't turn off. What the heck is the point of the key hole?? Plus the doors locked automatically when I touched the handle, so I literally just kept my key in my pocket the entire time I had the car. I don't think I took it out once.

My thunderbird could do this. You could also remove the key from the ignition while it was running.

I'm aware it can be done with a car with a key, but not a push to start.

I can start my BMW without ever putting the key in the hole. You can even get out and the car will still drive. I always just leave my key in my pocket as I have that thing where I just touch the handle and it unlocks.

I can't pull the key out while it's running, and if the car stalls, I cannot restart it without inserting the key again.

It's likely that you got a newer one, this one is a 2006.

That's so weird. What year is it? I wonder if they differ for some reason...

if it is anything like my Hyundai, the slot is only if the fob/key battery goes dead. You should nit need to put it in the dash to start the car.
